DIY Geometric Hanging Shelves

Asset 2

Don’t be a square – break out of your right-angle fatigue with some triangles and hexagons by trying out this geometric hanging shelf. It’s ideal for some combo decoration and storage space, all the while adding a flair of chic and elegance. Layer two or three next to each other for a snazzy edge to your interior design!

STEP 1: Cut your brass tubing into 13 pieces, 15.25 cm each. Cut 4 more pieces, 12.5 cm each.

STEP 2: Thread your jewelry wire through a 15.25cm piece of tubing. Repeat until you have 5 pieces of 15.25cm tubing on your wire. Arrange the wire into a backwards ‘S’ pattern, starting from the bottom and going upwards. Then take the wire (which should now be in your left hand), and pass it through the middle tube, back to your right hand. It should resemble two triangles, one on top and one mirrored.

STEP 3: Okay, now pay attention, we’re about to get a little loopy: continue adding the tubing to the wire, forming triangles in counter-clockwise loops. By the end, it should look like a sliced hexagon – with one slice at the bottom missing.

STEP 4: Next we’re going to add the top shelf support. Take your wire and add another 15.25cm piece. Now add a 12.5cm piece, pass the wire through the 15.25cm piece at the top of the hexagon (left to right), add another 12.5cm piece, and then back through the 15.25cm piece that serves as the top of the support (up to down). It’s a little tricky, so be sure to consult the video for a demonstration.

STEP 5: At this point, the wire should be smack-dab in the center of the hexagon. Now we’re going to add the lower shelf frame: add two 12.5cm pieces, pass the wire downwards through the lower left side of the hexagon, and through another 15.25cm piece, and then back through the first 12.5cm piece we added in this step. Just like Step 4 – phew!

STEP 6: Wrap the wire firmly around the middle to secure it in place, and trim any hanging excess.

STEP 7: Break off a chunk of your polymer clay and roll it flat. Using your ruler and a craft knife, carefully trace cut out 2 triangles, 15 ⅞ cm equilateral. Bake them for 10-15 min at 150 degrees C.

STEP 8: Hold your new geometric hanging up to your wall and measure  with a pencil where you want it to hang. Drill your offset clips in and hang your new creation on it.

STEP 9: Drizzle a small layer of glue on the tubing and place the triangles on the shelf frames we created earlier. Finish by adding miniature planters, succulents, and trinkets to your wall hanging!

A delightful housewarming gift, or a sophisticated way to spice up your miniature wall hangings! The perfect way to tie in all of your wall decor – literally.
