How to Read an Astrological Birth Chart

Wouldn't it be nice if life came with some sort of manual at birth?

Something that would help us determine what career path we are best suited for, or to help understand why we seem to attract certain types of people into our lives? Well, if you believe in astrology, the stars can do just that!

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (also referred to as a natal chart) is a snapshot of the sky at the time and location of your birth. From this map, astrologers can read the position of the planets and how they correlate to one another. If you don’t want to hire an astrologer to read yours for you, you can take a stab at learning how to interpret your own. It’s incredibly easy to order a birth chart reading online — all you need is the date, time, and place you were born to begin!

Where to look: the houses

In order to look at the areas of life in question, you need to have your birth chart to reference. Once you have that, take a look at the parts that are sectioned off like pieces of a pie. They are numbered 1 through 12 and are called houses. They represent specific areas of your life in your chart.

Career

Is having a career important to you? Are you destined to have a very successful career doing what you love, while earning lots of money?  The place in a birth chart to reference career is the 10th house. Depending on what sign your 10th house starts in, and if any planets are sitting there, you could be destined for fame or fortune through your career! For example, many charts that have Leo (a sign that loves to perform) in the house of career, often thriving in jobs that allow them to be admired. If you find Jupiter (the planet of luck and expansion) in the 10th house, this could be an indicator of great fame and fortune throughout your career!

Another house to look at in regards to earning money is the 2nd house, which rules income and values.  If you have a planet like mars (the planet that motivates you to act) sitting in your 2nd house, it’s likely that you feel compelled to earn money, and the zodiac sign there will tell you how you will likely to go about earning it.

Love and romance

To look at what you likely attract in terms of love and relationships, it’s important to observe your 7th house: the house of other people and personal relationships. Quite often the sign that starts this house is considered to be the qualities that you don’t recognize within yourself, but instead attract through other people. For example, when Venus (the planet of love and beauty) is in the 7th house, one might not be aware of their own beauty, but will readily see it in others.

Another important house is the 5th house, which rules romance, creativity and children. Be sure to check out the sign that sits there, and if there are any planets hanging out in your 5th house. This house will  point toward whether having children is important to you, if you’ll end up having them later in life — or any at all!

Be a detective

As you can begin to see, there is an endless amount of exploring that can be done in terms of analyzing one’s birth chart. Internet search engines are wonderful for looking up aspects and finding information on specific placements, and the amount of books to study are endless.
