DIY Pet Stairs | Pet Projects

Asset 2

We know the struggle: you want your pup to sleep next to you at night, but they're not big enough to jump onto your bed. We're here to help! On today's episode of Pet Projects, Luke is showing you how to make super simple doggy stairs so that your furry friend will never leave your side.

Materials
  • 2 wooden crates one of them should be small enough to fit on top of the larger crate horizontally
  • paint white 2 in 1 paint and primer
  • Paint brush
  • E6000 glue
  • Scissors
  • fusion tape
  • tape measure
  • patterned fabric
  • pillow batting

Step 1: To start, you’ll need two crates, one large, one small at any craft store. Make sure the smaller box is the same width as the larger box. Prime and paint both of your wooden crates. We used a 2-in-1 paint+primer to save ourselves a step. It looks the most natural if you paint in the same direction as the wood grain.

Step 2: Once the paint has dried, use E6000 glue along the base of your smaller crate to secure the smaller crate on top of the larger one to create the base of your staircase. Set aside to let it dry completely. To be safe, you might even want to let it set overnight to be sure your stairs are secure before Fido gives them a go!

Step 3: Now it’s time to make some pillows! Measure the length and the width of your stairs. Ours were about 8 inches by 12 inches. Cut a piece of fabric that is double that size, plus 1.5 inches on all sides; so in this case, 19 inches by 27 inches.

Step 4: Lay the fabric pattern side up and cut 2 pieces of fabric fusion tape half the length of the fabric. Use an iron to heat up the tape. You’ll know it’s ready when the paper easily peels off. Remove the paper, then fold the fabric onto itself and iron the sides together to fuse the fabric into a mini pillowcase. Let cool for at least 2 minutes.

Step 5: Turn the pillowcase inside out and fill with batting or fiber fill from any fabric or craft store. Finish off the pillow by sealing the final edge with E6000 glue and folding the fabric over onto itself like an envelope. Don’t worry- you won’t see that seam because it’s going face-down onto the step!

Step 6: Time for the final touch! Run your E6000 glue along the wooden slats of the crate where your pillows are going to go. Place the pillows seam side down onto the glued surface and press down to secure. You can tack down the edges for extra hold if you need to.

Now your pooch can join you no matter where you are with these adorable pet stairs that are completely customizable to fit right in with your decor. If you liked this DIY and are going to create it for your furry friend, let us know!
