Nothing makes a home feel complete like the presence of some fresh live flowers. Flower pots can be messy, and store-bought planters can be expensive. Who says we can’t create our own warm and colourful planter from scratch? All you need are a couple of construction materials, and you’ll have the perfect quirky yet minimalist addition to your plant storage – ideal for either indoor or outdoors!
Whenever using a table saw, be sure to wear safety goggles! For full safety details on how to use a table saw, make sure to read our safety guide before you get started!
STEP 1: First, using your table saw, you will want to cut three pieces that are 30 inches long that are 1 in by 6 in wood. Make sure to use safety goggles when cutting the boards!
STEP 2: Next, you will want to grab your scrap pieces from the boards that you cut, and create two two 4×3 in pieces that will act as caps on the end of the planter.
STEP 3: Begin to assemble your wood to form a box – drill three 2.5 cm screws to fasten it. If your screws end up sunken, add some wood filler to smooth it out. Let dry for 15 minutes. Also, feel free to paint the interior of the boards as well with a primer of your choice to add a cleaner looking style to the planter before you attach everything together.
STEP 4: Sand over your box. Paint the box fully, except for the back side, and let dry. Paint your aluminum square pipes white and let dry.
STEP 5: Take your carpenter square and measure 10 cm in from the edge on the top part of your box – use a pencil to mark. Place your aluminum pipe in that spot, letting it stick out 2.5 cm over the front of the box. Measure 2.5 cm in from the back edge of the box, and drill a hole in the pipe (make sure you’re using a wood and metal drill bit – we want the hole to go through the pipe and the wood of the box). Repeat on the other sides of the box with the other 3 pipes.
STEP 6: Line your box with a heavy-duty plastic drop cloth cut to size. Use a staple gun to staple the plastic cloth in place – this will prevent the wood from rotting when you water your plants. Trim the extra plastic off.
STEP 7: Add your soil and get planting!
