Top off your dining table with a handmade table runner that will make your next dinner, lunch, or brunch look top of the line with your labor of love. See how you can make this minimal and chic pom pom table runner in a few easy steps!
So you’ve already knocked out the centerpiece vase — time to keep making that table even more rad. To keep with the Moroccan theme we kept our look very minimal with a beige and white colour palette. But of course, you can switch up the look by using colourful poms, or patterned fabric — whatever fits your decor aesthetic!
To Make the Fabric Runner
Step 1: Cut a length of fabric 6 ft and 2 inches (74 inches total) long by 20 inches wide. The extra inches are for the seams on the side.
Step 2: To create a clean hemmed edge, fold over 1 inch of fabric on all sides of the runner, pinning as you go. Then sew 1/2 inch in from the edge along all sides. Don’t forget to tuck your corners under!
How To Make Pom Poms in Bulk
Step 1: Tie one end of your yarn around the leg of a chair or table. Loop the yarn around the opposite leg and keep looping until you have 20-30 long loops. You should wrap the yarn tight enough to stay up on the chair legs, but not so tight that the yarn is pulled super taught.
Step 2: Cut a series of 4-inch pieces of yarn and tie them 2-3 inches apart from each other along the looped yarn. The farther apart they are, the bigger your poms will be. Cut the edges off of the chair legs and you’re left with a long sausage lookin’ yarn piece. Finally, cut in between each of the tied off yarn sections to make the rest of your poms! SO much faster than making them all individually.
Finish the Runner
Step 1: Use a pencil to mark every 6 inches along the sides of your runner. This is where you’ll be sewing your poms and keeps them nice and evenly spaced.
Step 2: Tie a piece of embroidery floss in a double knot around the center of your pom pom. Leave about 3 inches of thread on either side. Use a big eye needle to sew one end of the floss through the top of the runner’s edge, then bring the other end of the floss around and tie the two pieces together on the back of the runner.
And just like that, you have your handmade Moroccan-inspired table runner just in time to host your next event!
