DIY Mardi Gras Straws + Pineapple Daiquiris!

Here at Makeful, we're fixin' to have a grande ol' time this Mardi Gras! We came up with the most delicious pineapple daiquiri recipe (complete with an edible glitter- YES, EDIBLE GLITTER- sugared rim), and the most amazing and adorable DIY party hack to keep your guests' drinks marked clearly and save you serious cleanup time.

Personalized Party Straws

You know those little wine marker ring things that you forget are on the stem of your glass and then sometimes mess up your dishwasher? If you’ve fallen victim to this mishap and you’re looking for a quick fix to customize any cup, even if they don’t have a stem, we have an easy and crafty solve. Lucky for you, these are the kinds of First World Party Problems we solve at Makeful. You’re welcome.

Enter: the personalized straw. SO simple. SO genius. You can adapt the shape and color for any party (hearts for V-Day, Shamrocks for St. Paddy’s, etc. etc.) but this Mardi Gras we made mini-masquerade masks to go with our custom tulle Mardi Gras masks we did last week for all our party guests! Here’s how we did it.

Step 1: Make a template for the mask shape on a piece of cardstock. Trace the template onto pieces of colorful paper and cut out the shapes. You’ll need two cutout shapes per straw.

Step 2: Write each guest’s name on one of the cutouts. Don’t forget to decorate the back side with something festive, too!

Step 3: Use double-sided tape or a glue stick – either works – on the back side of each cutout. Place the straw in between the two sides and press together to create your mini-mask!

And there you have it: an adorable and practical way to mark everyone’s drink with built-in easy cleanup! Your dishwasher thanks you.

Pineapple Rum Daiquiris

Now that you’ve made your super cute straws, you need something for your guests to drink! It’s no secret that the home of Mardi Gras is magical New Orleans, LA; and N’awlins (as the locals call it) is known for their daiquiris. So in keeping with the gold, purple, and green color scheme of Mardi Gras, we came up with this super simple (and SUPER yummy) frozen pineapple daiquiri recipe that uses tart lime, sweet Rumchata (horchata and rum’s delicious love child), and of course delicious pineapple. Yes, please! (This recipe serves 4).

Step 1: Add the frozen pineapple, pineapple juice, Rumchata, lime juice, and ice in a blender. Daiquiris are traditionally tart because of the lime juice, but if you want yours to be sweeter you can cut back on the lime and even add some simple syrup if you want! Pulse a couple times to break up the pineapple, then pureé until thoroughly blended. Pro Tip: there is dairy in Rumchata and the blender does “whip” the cream a bit. So, don’t overfill, or it will spill!

Step 2: Sugar the rim with our new favorite thing: EDIBLE GLITTER. It’s a thing! Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then place on a small dish or saucer of edible glitter (sugar sprinkles work too!). We added another layer of edible gold stars (BECAUSE, DUH) by taking the still-slightly-wet sugared rim and rolling it in our dish of stars so that a few stick to the outside of the rim for some extra cuteness and shine.

Step 3: Pour your daiquiris into the sugar-rimmed glasses. Finally, garnish with a wedge of lime and pop in your awesome personalized Mardi Gras mask straws!

Cheers to a great Mardi Gras! Laissez les bon temps rouler!
