DIY Pom-Pom Cozy Accent Pillow

When it comes to adding details to a living room or bedroom setting, you want to make sure that you are not only decorating, but you are also making a statement. If you have a bright and minimal room that is missing that pop of color, this easy DIY pom-pom accent pillow will help bring some more flare to your space and show off your fun side.

While this DIY is easy, it is a fair warning to say that it is not a quick project. This pillow is perfect for a weekend when you don’t have a lot of plans, or are ready to binge on the Santa Clarita Diet this weekend. Just saying.

For this project, you want to start off with a simple square pillow. On one side, we will cover the entire pillow with pom-poms that we will be making, and the other one will be covered by pattern fabric of your choice. For this pillow, we went with a polka-dot bandana that fit perfectly with the square shape of the pillow.

Step 1: Plug in your glue gun and let it heat. Begin by lining up the fabric to one side of the pillow and hot glue each corner to the pillow. Follow along with the rest of the edges so the fabric is fully aligned with the pillow, and ensure that all edges are glued on. Let cool.

Step 2: It’s time to pom-pom like crazy. Grab your yarn and your pom-pom makers. Make sure to use different sizes of pom-pom makers to give the pillow varied structure, and use different colors in a palette that looks great together.

Grabbing one pom-pom maker, open up the tool so the half moon sections spread out. Get one of your colors of yarn and start winding the yarn all the way around one of the half moons until it feels wound enough, and cut the end of the thread. Close that side back into the pom-pom maker.

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 to the other side.

Step 4: Once the second half moon is done, you can close both sides of the pom-pom maker.

Step 5: Once you are finished winding both sides of the pom-pom maker, take your scissors and begin cutting the yarn down the center of the pom maker and follow the small groove to cut all the way around.

Step 6: Cutting off one 5 inch piece from the original yarn you used, tie in the string between the two separated pieces of yarn to secure the cut yarn together. Tie it over once again to make a knot.

Step 7:  Now that the yarn is secure, open up the pom-pom maker by reopening the half-moons. When they are both open, pull apart the two pieces to release your pom-pom. You now have your first finished pom-pom!

Step 8: Repeat steps 2-7 for all the various colours that you will be using. Make sure to switch it up with the various pom-pom maker sizes. Once you are finished with all of your pom-poms, it should look like you’re ready to party.

Step 9: Now that you have all your pom-poms done, it’s time to start gluing again. Reheat your hot glue gun and start gluing way the poms directly onto the pillow. Luckily for you beginners, this project is very forgiving and even if you make a mistake, it will end up looking intentional.

Pro tip: Feel that you missed some holes with the way that you placed poms? Make smaller bright poms to fill it in and give more pops of color. Also, don’t feel that you have to stick to filling the entire pillow with poms. You can play with placing the poms in a pattern, or even just one color to make it more minimalist and even easier!

You are now FINALLY finished! You can now cuddle with your masterpiece and show it off to all your guests that come into your house.

Also, if you do have any friends over, this could be a fun project that you could all work on by making poms together. We’ll admit that we had a very relaxing day making poms as a team here at Makeful.
