Shawn Mendes Confirms He’s Single and We’re Here for It

Despite having attended the 2018 Met Gala with model Hailey Baldwin, Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has confirmed he’s flying solo.

In an interview with E! News’ Sibley Scoles, Mendes said those three magic words, “I am single,’ leaving little wiggle room for speculation.

He said he was lucky to have had Baldwin as his date for the gala because she inspired him to be more outgoing in an overwhelming situation.

“The Met Ball was such an incredible experience for me. It was just overwhelming in the most incredible way. I was so lucky for my first time going there to be able to go with someone like Hailey because she’s such a vet and I really admire people like her because of how outgoing she is in such an overwhelming experience,” he said.

“She was forcing me to get up and talk to people I would have been terrified to speak to or say hi to so I got to meet so many cool people because of her,” Mendes continued. “She’s super special, so sweet.”

Earlier in April, Mendes posted a photo of himself posing with Baldwin, sparking talk of romance between the pair. And even earlier in December, Mendes and Baldwin were spotted in Toronto keeping each other warm with a sweet cuddle.

However, Baldwin has also shut down the hearsay, proclaiming her own single status in a recent interview.

“We hang out and he’s super-lovely and a very, very nice young gentleman. But I am single,” she said.

As rumours concerning his relationship status swirl, Mendes has bigger fish to fry at the moment. The 19-year-old singer released his third studio album, titled Shawn Mendes, May 25, and he’s busy promoting the hotly-anticipated record.

Billboard reports that Mendes created the album, in part, to cope with anxiety issues.

“About a year prior was my first time kind of experiencing anxiety and I wrote down in my notes the feelings of exactly what was going on because I wanted to make a song about that,” he said.

The album’s lead single, In My Blood, references these issues with lyrics like “I’m looking through my phone again, feeling anxious/Afraid to be alone again, I hate this/I’m trying to find a way to chill, can’t breathe.”

After topping the charts with his first two albums, Handwritten and Illuminate, at such a young age, it’s no surprise that Mendes’ third album is already another smashing success. And with Baldwin’s thriving modelling and acting career, it seems there isn’t much time left for a serious relationship for either of the young stars.
