Bringing in a houseplant is an easy, breezy way to lift your spirits by bringing the outdoors inside. This easy DIY copper pipe plant stand is the perfect decor accessory to show off your sprouts. Not only does this DIY work for functionality to lift your plant off the floor to protect your surfaces from water damage, the pipe adds a pop of color and a chic metallic element to your space. With a little bit of super glue and copper pipe, you're on your way to your brand new Modernica-inspired plant stand to complete your room.

If we can get all the things to make our room fit a completely modern and minimal aesthetic – we’ll do it. After we created this minimal dowel rod coat hanger, we were inspired to make this style plant stand after seeing similar mid-century shapes pop up in places like West Elm and Modernica. But rather than buying one with a hefty price tag, we decided to make our own chic version out of copper piping. You can pick up copper piping and all the fittings in any hardware store; it’s actually surprisingly affordable and easy to work with! Plus by using super strong glue in place of any kind of welding or soldering, the project is so easy (and safe) to make in an afternoon.

Step 1: Measure out and cut your copper pipe! Make sure all your pipe and parts have corresponding thicknesses. We used 1/2-inch copper pipe and hardware throughout.

For the legs you will need:

  • 4 x 6″ long pipe pieces
  • 4 x 12″ long pipe pieces
  • 4 x copper T-brackets

For the planter base you will need:

  • 4 x 1″ couplings
  • 4 x T-brackets
  • 4 x 4″ long pipe pieces

Step 2: Assemble the planter base first. Lay the pieces out flat so you know exactly what will be going where. It’s helpful to assemble one-half of the base and then the other, then piece the two halves together at the very end by inserting the inner couplings into the corresponding T-brackets.

To join the pipes and brackets, simply brush crazy glue around the pipe and the inside of the bracket, then quickly insert the pipe in the bracket. The glue dries and bonds extremely quickly, so you have to work fast! Pro Tip: we tried using E-6000 glue first, but then it took a very long time to dry and the stand ended up buckling under the weight of our heavy plant. We did a second try with krazy glue and it worked perfectly and 10x faster!

Step 3: Assemble the legs by gluing and inserting one 6-inch pipe and one 12-inch pipe on either side of the top of the T-bracket. Lay all 4 legs flat to dry.

Step 4: Join the legs to the base by brushing crazy glue inside the remaining open end on the leg’s T-bracket, and the four points of the planter base, then inserting the base into the leg. Pro Tip: Make sure you adjust each leg to be as-close-to-perfectly vertical as you can. Again, the glue dries very quickly, so you won’t be able to adjust the leg after the glue sets.

Step 5: For the finishing touch, pop the copper caps onto the top and bottom of the legs. You can use this last step to level out the planter if needed. When it’s all dry, place your plant on the base and admire your handiwork!

This planter is so unbelievably chic and we’re obsessed! The copper gives our space just the right pop of color. Paired with on-trend metallics, this plant stand has pretty much every ingredient you need for the perfect statement decor piece.
