Song lyrics are my favorite, so I'm always looking for a way to display them in my apartment. This project is perfect for song lyrics and requires another thing I love: thrifting. Sifting through thrift store piles (or in this case an abandoned house) to find an old painting is just the kind of adventure I love.
- old painting with a frame
- alphabet stickers
- ruler
- pencil
- white spray paint
Step 1: My first step was to remove the painting from the frame, depending on your painting, you might have to do the same. I then wiped the painting clean with slightly damp paper towels. Again, mine came from an abandoned house so it was dusty.
Step 2: Next, I chose the lyrics I wanted to use (Toto’s “Africa,” natch! “The wild dogs cry out in the night, As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company, I know that I must do what’s right”) and went about cutting out the individual letters and placing the words on the painting. I did this to figure out spacing and then drew pencil lines to follow when it came time to commit and peel off the back of the stickers.
Step 3: Once I did place the stickers on the painting, I went over each letter with a pencil eraser to rub it into the surface of the painting. I did this to make the stickers adhere better and decrease the possibility of paint getting underneath.
Step 4: After that, it was time to spray. I sprayed the whole thing white and let it dry overnight.
Step 5: The next day I carefully peeled the letters off with the help of an x-acto knife. I have to say, this part was pretty thrilling.
Step 6: Once the painting was done, I spray-painted the frame a complimentary color, put the new art in the frame, and that was it! Song lyric wall art!
