Cardi B Announces Her Pregnancy With a Camera Zoom-Out

Everything Cardi B does, she does with aplomb.

Before her musical career, the twenty-five-year-old made a name for herself on Instagram, sharing everything from her past as a stripper to her off-kilter sense of humour. Then, last year, she became the first rapper of all time to have her first three tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 appear in the top 10 simultaneously. And this week, her breakthrough album, Invasion of Privacy, was released — and it’s already gone gold.

But she took her talent for working an audience to a whole new level on last Saturday’s episode of SNL, when she announced her pregnancy without saying a word.

Her performance on the show started off typically enough, with a close-up shots as she performed her slow-burning single “Be Careful.” However, halfway through the song, the camera zoomed out and a spotlight lit her body, revealing that she was sporting a sleek white Christian Siriano gown over an unmistakable pregnant belly. Of course, Cardi kept going like it was no big thing, as the audience erupted into cheers.

Earlier in the day, Cardi’s fiancé, Offset of hip hop trio Migos, had hinted that the couple were entering a new phase of their relationship. “Cardi and I look forward to our next chapter together,” he wrote on Twitter.

Cardi herself has, until now, brushed off rumours of her pregnancy. When people speculated on her Instagram account, she posted, “No b**** I’m just getting fat. Let me be fat in peace.” (Fittingly, this appeared beneath a photo of Buttercup, the surly Powerpuff girl).

So what’s next for this media savant? Just another unprecedented move — she’ll be co-hosting the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, making her the first co-host in the history of the Tonight Show since it started in the ’50s. And after that, considering Cardi’s media savvy, we won’t be surprised if her pregnancy photos rival Beyonce’s.

Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure: Cardi’s not the type to let having a kid slow her down.
