People, masculinity is complicated.
While there are those who equate “being a man” with locking oneself in a cage of repressed emotion never to reveal a moment’s weakness or vulnerability, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is here to show us another way.
With an Instagram tribute to his newborn daughter and his partner, Lauren Hashian, the actor/professional beefcake has shown yet again that beneath his toned exterior lies a soft heart, not to mention a profound respect for women.
“Blessed and proud to bring another strong girl into this world,” The Rock began his post.
The noted strongman went on to marvel at the strength and power it takes to give birth. “I was raised and surrounded by strong, loving women all my life, but after participating in baby Tia’s delivery, it’s hard to express the new level of love, respect and admiration I have for [Hashian] and all mamas and women out there.”
He then offered a “word to the wise” for other men, advising that they support the women in their lives in whatever way they can when they give birth. “But,” he continues, “if you really want to understand the single most powerful and primal moment life will ever offer – watch your child being born. [It’s] a life changer and the respect and admiration you have for a woman, will forever be boundless.”
The Rock then addresses his daughter directly, and while she is not his first (he has a previous daughter with Hashian and one with ex-wife Dany Garcia), his excitement and amazement at becoming a father for a third time is obvious. “And to my third and youngest daughter, Tiana Gia – like I did when your two older sisters Simone Alexandra and Jasmine Lia were born, you have my word, I’ll love, protect, guide and make ya laugh for the rest of my life. Your crazy dad has many responsibilities and wears many hats in this big ol’ world, but being your dad will always be the one I’m most proud to wear.”
The accompanying photo displays not only his newborn daughter’s preciousness, but also The Rock’s incredible size, not to mention his arm and chest tattoo, a tribute to his Samoan heritage.
The Rock’s approach to his family life is truly loving and compassionate, and he clearly knows that it’s girls who run the world. To this day, his ex-wife, Dany Garcia, remains his manager, and the exes and their new partners and children have created an incredible “blended family” that seems to be filled with love.
So the next time you hear someone say “be a man,” think of The Rock.
